Modhu Mitha Restaurant – Seating Capacity Expansion & Interior Design

Overview

Modhu Mitha is an already successful Indian restaurant, known for both dine-in and takeaway services. Due to its growing popularity, the restaurant was frequently operating at full capacity, creating a need to increase seating without compromising the customer experience.

Spacekind was commissioned to redesign the interior and expand the restaurant’s seating capacity, addressing the challenge of limited space while enhancing functionality and aesthetics.

The Challenge: Maximising Space in a Busy Restaurant

The existing layout featured a dividing wall separating the waiting area, bar, and main dining space. The waiting area was positioned on a lower level, accessed via a small set of steps through an opening in the structural wall.

Despite high customer demand, a significant portion of the floor area was underutilised. The waiting area was oversized and inefficient, reducing the overall seating potential of the restaurant.

Our Solution: Smart Restaurant Layout Redesign

To unlock the full potential of the space, we reimagined the entire layout:

  • Removed the structural dividing wall and installed a large steel beam to create an open-plan restaurant

  • Raised the waiting area to align with the main dining floor level

  • Introduced a mezzanine-style layout to expand usable dining space

  • Installed glass balustrades and new access stairs for a modern, open feel

This transformation significantly increased seating capacity while improving customer flow and visibility throughout the restaurant.

Results: Increased Capacity & Enhanced Customer Experience

The completed restaurant refurbishment successfully:

  • Increased seating capacity without extending the building footprint

  • Improved customer flow between waiting, bar, and dining areas

  • Created a more modern, spacious, and inviting interior

  • Enhanced the overall dining experience for guests

Design Process & Key Features

The redesign focused on blending functionality with contemporary restaurant interior design:

  • New Bar Area: A bespoke painted timber bar creates a focal point within the space

  • Optimised Waiting Area: Reduced in size and enhanced with upholstered banquette seating, feature stools, and round tables

  • Lighting Design: Pendant lighting installed above the bar to create warmth and ambience

  • Wall Finishes: Existing timber dado panelling retained and complemented with new oak-effect mock panels

  • Flooring Upgrade: Durable vinyl wood plank flooring installed throughout, with contrasting finishes in the bar and waiting areas

  • Joinery & Details: New skirting and refined finishes to elevate the overall look and feel
